Bus interior panels operate in demanding in-cabin environments, requiring materials to meet strict standards for flame retardancy, impact resistance, scratch resistance, low emissions and ageing resistance. Although HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) sheet features low cost and simple thermoforming, it has obvious performance limitations and is not a qualified material for bus interior panels. PVC/ABS co-extruded sheet and TPU/ABS composite sheet are preferred options for coach interior manufacturing.
HIPS suffers critical weaknesses in weathering, flame resistance and surface performance. Containing benzene rings in its molecular structure, HIPS tends to yellow and lose toughness under continuous temperature cycling and interior light exposure inside buses. It becomes brittle upon impact. Buses constantly vibrate during operation, and passenger contact or luggage impact may crack HIPS panels and create sharp broken edges, bringing potential safety hazards. HIPS also ranks low in scratch resistance among common interior plastics. Friction from baggage and regular passenger touch will leave permanent marks quickly, degrading the overall interior appearance within a short service period.
Flame retardancy and odour control are non-negotiable requirements for bus interiors. HIPS is highly flammable and releases dense, toxic smoke during combustion. In case of fire, this will greatly increase the risk of smoke inhalation for passengers. Conventional HIPS retains residual monomers from production, which release unpleasant odours when heated. Odour build-up inside enclosed cabins fails to meet low-VOC specifications for coach interiors. Besides, HIPS has poor chemical resistance. Common cleaning agents, hand creams and other daily chemicals can cause surface whitening and corrosion, raising maintenance costs for fleet operators.
PVC/ABS co-extruded sheet serves as a proven mainstream solution for bus interiors. It combines excellent flame retardancy from PVC and balanced toughness from ABS. The material achieves required bus fire safety grades with low smoke and low toxicity. It delivers superior surface hardness, scratch resistance and chemical stability, resisting deformation and discolouration under temperature changes. It performs well in vacuum forming for curved interior profiles, with controllable odour and VOC levels to maintain consistent aesthetics over long-term use.
TPU/ABS composite sheet targets premium bus interior applications. The TPU top layer provides soft touch, outstanding scratch, wear and tear resistance. It maintains flexibility at low temperatures without becoming rigid. This material resists oil, grease and cleaning chemicals, with better anti-ageing performance than PVC/ABS. Its low-emission properties make it ideal for instrument surrounds and side decorative panels on high-end coaches.
Busman factory offers custom PVC/ABS instrument panels and bus interior panels. Backed by decades of experience in bus interior tooling and vacuum forming, we develop custom moulds according to customer drawings or physical samples. Surface texture, colour and cut-out positions can be fully customised for city buses and tour coaches. Our products adopt integrated vacuum forming for stable dimensional accuracy. Raw materials comply with bus interior safety requirements covering flame retardancy, low odour and weathering performance. We provide one-stop custom services including material selection, mould development and finished part delivery for new vehicle projects and interior refurbishment orders.
