ABS sheets, as a widely used engineering plastic, dominate the market due to their excellent impact strength, dimensional stability, and processability. However, their inherent weakness lies in UV resistance: UV rays trigger molecular chain breakage and oxidation reactions, leading to surface cracking, powdering, yellowing, and a significant decrease in mechanical properties. Data shows that the impact strength of virgin ABS sheets can decrease by 50% after six months of outdoor exposure, and their service life typically does not exceed 5 years, limiting their application in outdoor furniture, building exteriors, and other fields.
Modification Technology
To overcome this limitation, the industry has developed a mature modification technology system, constructing multiple barriers from internal additives to surface protection:
Additive addition is a fundamental method: by mixing in benzophenone-based UV absorbers, hindered amine light stabilizers, and other components, UV rays can be directly absorbed or scattered, inhibiting photo-oxidation chain reactions. For example, Yuyao Xindegao's FR165UV modified material, after being formulated with composite additives, can achieve a UV resistance life of 5-10 years while also possessing V0 flame retardant performance.
Blending achieves complementary performance: ABS is combined with weather-resistant ASA (acrylate), forming an "ASA surface + ABS substrate" structure. This retains the strength of ABS while leveraging the UV resistance of ASA to protect against outdoor corrosion. These composite sheets are widely used in automotive exteriors, outdoor charging station housings, and other applications.
Surface treatment provides additional protection: Coating with an acrylic or polyurethane weather-resistant coating directly blocks UV rays from contacting the material surface, while also improving gloss.
Scenario adaptation
Modification technology enables ABS sheets to be used in tiered applications in UV resistance: For ordinary outdoor scenarios such as community bulletin boards, modified ABS with added light stabilizers can be used, offering cost-effectiveness and meeting 3-5 years of use requirements; for harsh environments such as photovoltaic equipment housings in high-altitude areas, ASA/ABS composite sheets or specialized coatings are required to ensure long-term stability under strong UV radiation. For applications with extremely high performance requirements, such as electronic devices and automotive exteriors, PC/ABS or ASA/PMMA alloy materials can be upgraded to further enhance weather resistance and gloss.
While virgin ABS sheets have inherent limitations in UV resistance, modification technologies have completely transformed their applications. From additive modification to composite blending, these technologies not only extend material lifespan but also broaden their application boundaries in outdoor fields. When selecting ABS sheets, it's essential to consider the usage environment, lifespan requirements, and cost budget to ensure they are both durable and suitable for UV exposure.
